Steve Sheinkin visited with second, third and fourth grade today to talk about his new books "Abraham Lincoln, Pro Wrestler" and "Abigail Adams, Pirate of the Caribbean". He also talked about writing these fun books. Afterwards, the students wrote down ideas for other famous people with interesting occupations. We sent those in to Steve - maybe he'll us an idea from Lincoln!
One of my favorite author/musician came to Lincoln School today. I have been a fan since my boys were young and we went to his concerts. I was thrilled to share the music and books of Justin Roberts and his partner, Liam Davis. It was music and reading all day long as they met with third grade and read Justin's book "The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade"; wrote songs with fourth grade; and talked and sang about smart parts with our youngest students. It was a fantastic day! In celebration of International Dot Day, Lincoln students wore dots, made dots for the library and read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. It's a sweet book about the power of a little encouragement. We all need to make our mark and see where it takes us.
We would love to see all the ways and places students read over the summer. You can take a photo of your student reading and email it to me. I will post their photo on the library website as well as in the library. I can't wait to see all the kids reading!
The summer slide is not a slide you want your children to be on. Here's a great article excerpt about the importance of reading with your child every day and how it will help to maintain their abilities. Think of it like practicing an instrument or a sport. If you don't practice for three months, you can fall really behind.
I am including a link to different summer reading lists for all different ages. Additionally, you can visit the library Pinterest site for lots of different book lists. It's located under the Resources tab. Just keep reading! Oh the Places You Can Read!
Students can have fun reading this summer in unusual ways and places. They have a checklist they can use to keep track of all the different ways such as while wearing a hat or under a tree. Please keep this checklist in a spot where they can check off the different places. Bring the checklist back during the first week of school for a small prize. The checklist is online here as well. Lincoln School will be celebrating Poem in your Pocket Day on Thursday. Everyone is asked to find a poem and keep it in your pocket all day. When you see people, you can ask them to read it to you.
Lincoln School is thrilled to have author / cartoonist coming to our school on May 3rd. He has a new book "Marty Pants" that he has written and we look forward to visiting with him. Personalized books can be purchased using the order form below.
Author / Illustrator David Biedrzycki visited Lincoln in April. The students really enjoyed learning about his life and how he writes and illustrates books. Thanks for a terrific visit, David!
Congratulations to those third and fourth graders who completed the Bluestem Challenge. They read 14 nominated books and were treated to a pizza party yesterday. The winner of the Illinois Bluestem Award was -- The War That Saved My Life.
